Tips for a Successful Project

  • Have a meeting with your supervisor every week - even if you think you haven't done anything. This will help to keep you motivated (or spark some motivation).
  • "Take ownership" of your project - you're not doing it for your supervisor (so there is no need to apologise to them if you haven't done much - it is yourself you should be apologising to!) You must be the driver of your project.
  • Do something every week - this is not something you can "pull-out" at the last minute - it has to be a continuous, consistent effort over the whole year.
  • Be structured about your project - know what you're aiming for and have a plan for how to get there. Revise your plan often.

Choosing a project: Make sure that you choose a project which is commensurate with your background and, in particular, any majors that you are taking. Projects are used by employers to ascertain your ability to put your engineering knowledge into practice.
