Announcements
If you wish to graduate at the end of Semester 2, 2009:-
your ENGN3100 report submission deadline is 5 pm on Friday 30 October, 2009 (end of semester 2, 2009). If you submit a report after this deadline, it will still be assessed at a later date but you will NOT be able to graduate at the end of this semester. This deadline will be strictly enforced. Note: This deadline has now passed. Reports can still be submitted but they will be marked next year.
You also need to complete the short 5 question survey
available in Wattle.
If your report meets the ENGN3100 report requirements (see below) you will see CRS (Course Requirements Satisfied) against ENGN3100 on your transcript.
The annual work experience information seminar was held on Thursday 15 October, 2009 in ENGN T from 5:30-7:30pm. This is relevant for 2nd and 3rd years students yet to complete work experience requirements. Slides from Presentation: October 2009
The BE course at the ANU is accredited by the
Engineers Australia.
The accreditation is a certification of professional
standard and quality of the course. Also, it means that as a graduate
of the course you will be entitled to apply for membership of the
Engineers Australia.
A requirement of Engineers Australia is (as part of
the degree accreditation) that students complete the equivalent of
12 weeks of full-time work experience outside the University
during their studies. This is implemented in the BE course at
the ANU as the unit ENGN3100.
Work experience can be started and completed at any time during enrolment
as a student in the University. Usually it is carried out after 2nd
and 3rd year.
A report must be submitted via the
Wattle web-site as part of the work
experience.
This course is not graded. If your report meets the requirements you will see CRS (Course Requirements Satisfied) against ENGN3100 on your transcript.
You will receive an RP grade that will change to CRS when you do submit a satisfactory report. Your Wattle enrolemnt will not expire.
Objectives
Show initiative and ability in finding companies
or institutions in which to carry out work experience. This includes
finding addresses and names of appropriate people to write to, writing
letters seeking employment, attending interviews and gaining a position.
Participate in a professional way in the work-force
and contribute to the operation of the company/institution. This includes
some or all of:
taking on responsibility
for certain jobs;
making decisions
based on your professional training;
collaborating
with team members;
managing resources
in the best interests of the employer/company;
reporting and
communicating results to supervisor(s) in charge of the job/operation.
Take a professional overview/assessment of the company/institution,
in particular looking at the business and its suitability for Australia,
the administrative structure, the financing of the business and other
issues described in more detail in the attached document.
Requirements
1.
Students must complete 12 weeks (60 days, 420 hours) of full-time
work experience as part of their engineering degree.
2.
A 9-15 page report must be
submitted describing the work experience. The employer must sign
off on the report. The report should contain:
Title
Contents
Summary
(Scanned) LETTER(S) FROM EMPLOYER(S)
Technical Report
Development of Stage 1 Competency Standards for Professional Engineer
refer to the templates and standards below
Please see the report template on this page.
3.
If you are claiming for employment at more than one place of work, your report must include a letter from each employer (on company letterhead, where letterhead exists) being claimed for, stating the number of full-time and part-time days worked
by the student, with dates.
This is important so that it is easy
to see exactly how much time the student has actually worked for.
A template is provided in the report. LETTERS
WITHOUT ENOUGH DETAIL WILL NOT BE ACCEPTED.See the template provided above on this page. Scan signed letters and include in your electronic report submission. Keep the originals.
The report itself need only describe the experience at one of the places (must be one of the places satisfying the engineering requirement).
4.
Of the 12 weeks of work experience claimed at least
8 weeks (280 hours) must be within an engineering environment, preferably
working with a professional engineer. The other 4 weeks (140 hours) may be
in any general type of work (e.g. retail).
5.
Students cannot claim for any work undertaken
within the ANU or any other university.
6.
Students who are undertaking their honours project
with an employer other than the ANU may claim this time as
work experience up to the full 12 weeks, based upon the above
rules.
7.
All work experience claimed must have been completed
since commencement of the degree.
Late completion
Sometimes students find it impossible to fulfill their
work experience obligations during the course of study. For these
cases the Department of Engineering allows the following arrangement:
1.
On completing the course the student may request,
from the Head of Department, an official letter certifying that
s/he has completed all academic requirements of the degree, thus
allowing her/him to take up professional employment.
2.
The student is allowed to complete work experience
as part of their employment and submit their report after leaving
the university.
3.
On completion of this requirement the student is
allowed to formally graduate. This is particularly helpful to
foreign students who can complete their work experience after
returning to their own countries.
Insurance
If in a paid arrangement, you will be covered by the employer's
workers' compensation scheme.
The ANU covers students on course
related unpaid work experience, but the insurance only applies
if arranged prior to the work being undertaken. Engineering
students can be covered for the full 12 weeks, but you MUST fill
out the Approval for Cover for Work Experience Students form (which can be found by navigating from the work experience link above) and be assessed
for elligibility by the ANU insurance
office.
